Interesting fact about rivers: the ratio of a river's length (source-mouth) to its length as the crow flies is always roughly pi. Apparently this is truest for rivers that cross gently sloping planes. O, wonderous nature!

Yeah that has always bothered me. Because it is a place name just like a city and needs to be capitalized. Plus if you don't capitalize it one could get confused with ambiguous sentences such as "I walked across the desolate earth." could mean "I walked across the desolate Earth." Both have different meanings.
