so, that was the record holder until Kipketer broke it in 92...that's a pretty good length of time for that record to stand.

No, Kipketer didn't break it until '97, some 16 years after this run. All told, Coe held the record from '79 to '97, over 18 years! The longest time anyone has held the 800m record.

Coe was the greatest runner of all time. It's a pity he never got to have a proper go at 5k. I have zero doubt he would of hammered the crap out of 13 minutes.

He trained for 5000m in 84/85, but when he got a back problem in the summer of 85, he couldn't do the longer sessions needed. Thus he stuck with the 8 & 15, still managing to run 1:43.07 on 5k training. He again trained for 5000 in winter 86/87, but got injured in May 87 and was out for the whole season. He decided without having tested himself in competition fully, he wouldn't risk doing the 5000 in Seoul, but instead stick with the 8 & 15.

I too feel he would have run 13mins no problem. People don't realise that his range was potentially as good as Aouita's. He ran 10 miles in training in '79 in 45 mins, & beat Coghlan (world 5k champ) & McCloud (Olympic 10000m silver medalist) in a 4 Mile road race in '78, after only having run 800m that season. Frank Horwill, UK mid distance coach watched Coe do a series of 800m reps with Tim Hutchings ( 13:11 guy) in 86, specific training for 5k. Each session got faster and Coe led every one.
Horwill said: "But ... ( 4 months ago by deano27671)
Horwill said: "But where did Coe get his amazing endurance from? The answer came to me in 1986 when I went to Battersea Park Track one Saturday morning with a 13:11 5K performer to do a session of 7 x 800 at 5K speed with 45secs rest. The rep times were fixed at 2mins.08secs ....Coe was on the track and came across and asked what we were doing and could he join in? I felt a little apprehensive that an acknowledged 800/1500m runner would not survive a 5K pace session with a short recovery."

"The 800s went like this: 2:08, 2:06, 2:04, 2:02, 2:00, 1:58 and 1:56! Coe led them all. Afterwards, he confessed that he did a 5K pace session at 13:20 speed each week. I ventured the opinion that he could run a good 5K anytime. He agreed, but said he didn't like the event! It is doubtful whether any 800m runner before or since could have completed such a session in such times."

he has to be the greatest british track athlete of all time - with the best range of running - obviously from 800m to 1 mile, but people say that he could have also competed in the 400m and the 5000m
He did have the ... ( 1 month ago by deano27671)
He did have the best range. He ran for the UK 4 x 400m team in '79 and '81, with a fastest leg of 45.5! He trained at 13:20 5000m pace every week and beat Coghlan (83 World 5km champion) over 4miles in a road race in 78. He also won the famous Vigevano road race (7.5km) in 1980 in 20:59, sub 28 min 10,000m pace and 38 secs quicker than Ovett ran the same course the following year in '81
I agree Coe could ... ( 4 days ago by Lyndehouse)
I agree Coe could have been a competitive 5k runner, but it is hard to know if he could have been the best in the world. Said Aouita could complete that session--Ovett, Joaquim Cruz, Jim Ryun, Peter Snell would all be close.
Cruz certainly ... ( 4 days ago by deano27671)
Cruz certainly wouldn't. Didn't produce anything impressive enough over 1500m to suggest he had the speed endurance. I doubt Snell would have either. Certainly Ovett, Aouita and probably Ryun would have, but the point is NONE of them would also be capable of running sub 46 secs for 400m at the same time in their career!
Said Aouita and ... ( 3 days ago by Lyndehouse)
Said Aouita and Hicham El-Guerrouj could complete that session and I am sure both could conservatively run 46 high/1:42.7 range for 800-meters had they focused on those distances. Snell most certainly could complete that workout. Everything he did was on cinder tracks, ran 100 miles per week and I am sure he could produce 46/1:42/3:46 mile on modern synthetic tracks and training...Ryun is the same deal. And who knows what Wilson Kipketer could do had he moved up?
Aouita spent 88 ... ( 3 days ago by deano27671)
Aouita spent 88 focussing on 800 & couldn't run any faster than 1:43.9. His 400pb, set in Morocco, was 46.9. I don't doubt he could complete this session, but it is doubtful he had the basic speed to run sub 1:43. EL G certainly couldn't break 47 for 400m. Snell's WR 1:44.3 was actually on a grass track, not cinders, & would probably be worth about 1 sec faster on 80's synthetic. Peter Matthews once told me that cinder & grass tracks, if perfectly prepared, could be as quick as synthetic ones!
To suggest Snell ... ( 3 days ago by deano27671)
To suggest Snell could run 46/1:42/3:46 , when he had a pb for 440 yds (in relay leg) of 47.9 ( 47.6 for 400m & more than 2 secs slower than Coe's pb!) & a Mile pb of 3:54.1, is somewhat fanciful. His PB for 2000m was 5:12, so it is doubtful he would be able to run this session, as it requires 13:20 5000m ability! I suspect Kipketer had limited endurance, otherwise he would have moved up to 1500 towards the end of his career. There's a lot of ifs & buts & very little evidence to these claims.
Snell used Arthur ... ( 2 days ago by Lyndehouse)
Snell used Arthur Lydiard's training methods--the ones that are considered archaic today and during Coe's time. What would Coe do using Lydiard methods on those tracks? If Alan Webb can run 47/1:43, if I feel confident El-Guerrouj can finish ahead of him. The main thing that amazes me about Coe is that he weighed somewhere under 130 pounds and was able to turn out a sub 46 relay quarter while training as a middle/long distance runner. How about Haile? 47 for sure and a 2:03 marathon!
Webb has a 400 ... ( 1 day ago by deano27671)
Webb has a 400 relay pb of 47.4 (same as Ovett's!) set in 2001 when running mainly 800/1500m, which is worth about 48.0 for 400m. By the time he ran his 1:43.8 he could probably have run 47.5, but no faster. I would think EL G could have run faster than Webb's 800 pb, but the Moroccan is an endurance based athlete, and I doubt he ever broke 48 for 400m in training! You can't really compare athletes by asking what they would do with another's training.
As for Geb, there ... ( 1 day ago by deano27671)
As for Geb, there is no way he could run anything faster than 48 for 400m. Yes, he could run 51/52 secs last 400m in 10K races, but that doesn't mean he had sufficient fast twitch fibres to generate a 47 400m flat! A 2:03 marathon is a different matter, but then again I have my doubts about someone who manages to run the last 5000m of a 10K inside 13 mins, when he struggled to run that time for a single 5000m earlier in his career!
